I met Emily my freshman year of college, and she's been one of my closest friends every since. Over the last eight years we've seen each other through some major life changes, including two years together in East Asia. One memory that's seared in my brain is our first night in East Asia. We'd traveled together to the other side of the world, thousands of miles removed from family and everything that was familiar, we didn't speak a word of the local language, and yet we were committed to being there an entire year. When we were dropped off to our new dorm room in the middle of the night, I'll never forget looking back at Emily and recognizing the same half-terrified, "How on earth did I get here?" look on her face that I knew I had on my own. And then we just laughed. And then moved our beds into the same room because we were scared. :)
