Sing with me...
An exciting thing happened in my life today. I made bagels. From scratch. Successfully!
You may or may not know this about me, but I am a HUGE bagel fan (just ask my thighs, ha). Growing up I lived for cinnamon raisin bagels, and during this pregnancy there have been a few weeks where bagels were one of the few foods I could stomach. Bagels, Greek yogurt, clementines, and Goldfish crackers. Random, I know.
Anyway, each time I've bought a bag of bagels from the store, I've ended up being a little disappointed. I wanted a real bagel. A New York style, boiled-and-then-baked bagel. When I lived overseas I made 2-3 different attempts at making these bagels from scratch, and each time was a big fat failure.
Until today.
I found a bread machine recipe for bagels here and immediately knew I wanted to try them. So I did...and it worked! The bagels floated in the water (didn't sink like rocks) and then baked golden-brown. I may or may not have done a "happy dance" (with the windows open might I add) as I pulled them out of the oven!
What's really amazing is that it probably cost me under $1 to make 8 of these. I had been paying around $4 for 6 wannabe bagels from the store. No more store-bought bagels for me! And in terms of taste- this first batch was gone within 24 hours. :)
Oh YAYYYYY! I'm sooo happy your found a great recipe. I remember how sad you were after those failed attempts in EA. I'll have to come visit so you can make me a real NY bagel :)
